i feel like portland food carts deserve a post on its own. portland people love their late night food carts like angelenos love their taco trucks. my brother took us to the “hawthorne carts” for a midnight snack of poutine from the potato champion cart. i didn’t know what to expect, but it was delicious! poutine is a canadian diner staple consisting of french fries covered with gravy and topped with cheese curds.
the potato champion was one of several food carts parked out in the parking lot with a tent for patrons to eat under. it seemed to me like a permanent food festival, the kind they have in empty lots at county fairs. there was a variety of foods ranging from crepes to bbq to mexican.

the most interesting part was the crowd that hung around the the hawthorne carts, where i found a lady giving a man a dino tarot reading. there were several signs around portland that read “keep portland weird”. i kept thinking that i thought that was an austin thing, but i guess portland can be a little weird too.
